Recognized As Citizens
Living in a modern society that has established the government as a democracy encourages the citizens to be vocal about political issues. This notion should apply to all the citizens regardless of their profession or standing in society. When applying politics to sports, the athletes are told they cannot have the same ideas on an issue that involves the whole country by telling them to "stick to sports". In the articles Should Athletes Stick to Sports? by Jay Caspian Kang and The End of
“Stick to Sports” by Bryan Curtis discuss this idea of athletes and sportswriters breaking out the sports bubble in this new generation.
The ability to ignore the increasing political climate has become difficult for everyone to just ignore as Kang states, "But the latest intrusion of political talk into sports whether you deem it excessive or welcome has had a drastic effect on coverage". This should not surprise anyone especially with the wide divisions in political views and media constantly covering it more than ever. There is a large reason as to why people have become so torn over the issues of the country. That reason is the President, Donald Trump, as he continues to turn the nation that is supposed to be the United States of America into the Divided States of America as he constantly makes comments without thinking them through thoroughly. This man becomes the core of Curtis's sticking to sports conclusion.
As the athletes continue to step out of the sports world, so do others as Curtis says, "A sportswriter doesn’t have to "stick to sports" if the athletes don’t. One of the most remarkable parts of Muhammad Ali’s legacy was the way he persuaded writers to follow him like ring handlers as he swaggered through the ’60s". This cultural change for sports stems from the athletes and writers wanting to voice their opinions just like every other citizen. Many people that have been opposed by the sports world have tried to demoralize their efforts as they voice their opinions. This catalyst has caused the end of that "stick to sports" mentality as they now feel the urge to join fellow like-minded people.
Alas the word of the athletes is constantly being quelled by people that are only seeing them as this source of entertainment. That is most of the people that are opposing athletes like LeBron James and Steph Curry as they wish to see change in the country while others try to keep it the same. I have even heard people discuss athletes and other celebrities in the same light as just do your job. That mentality is not what the country is about because this restriction of freedom is not a foundation behind the United States. The ability to change the old ways is what should be defining the country that touts freedom.
