Birdie Wing: The Peak Television Experience

The name Birdie Wing might not evoke anything out of the general anime audience despite coming out of a large corporation like Bandai Namco.  But, I'm here to spread the good word on this golf anime. This original title from Bandai Namco Pictures is now partway through its second season. And to be honest, it is one of the most entertaining week-to-week shows out there. The energy and plot lines are so chaotic that trying to predict all of the outcomes requires attentive details at times.

One of the bigger reasons I can think of as to why people are not tuning in would be the inclusion of sport, and golf specifically. Sports anime are relatively popular, yet golf isn't the most gripping sport to display. So, the sell on an individual sport like this one is rather difficult. The hotness right now are these heavy action series by miles and they're not slowing down. But as Birdie Wing falters in this landscape, it makes up for in having heart and the willingness to top the last ridiculous event with an even more ridiculous sequence that leaves the viewer in awe.

The premise of Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story follows Eve, an impoverished and street-wise girl who uses golf to earn some money on the side. And Aoi Amawashi, the heiress to the Athens corporation, who is looking to go pro in golf. The way that these characters meet and become inter-twined is completely by chance and begins to funnel into a whirlwind that is capable of causing havoc for all involved.

The big draw for someone like me is the Soap Opera or Telenovela style storytelling that is reminiscent in shows like General Hospital for those in the United States. It really feels like the show wants the audience to keep guessing since Eve is deeply involved in the Mafia world dealings. Not only are we subjected to the Mafia, we also see secret relationships, bribery, under-the-table dealings, and outright assassinations in broad daylight. So, there is enough reason to see as to why this show has intensity like no other. It is simply not trying to be like the other shows on television and it is doing so by threading all of the core issues through golf.

I want to build a new district in this area and delete all of these poor people homes to increase the value of the area, also known as gentrification. You know what that means, golf time. It's all about the club hitting the ball and that is what makes Birdie Wing worth it. The problems stem from golf and will be dealt with through mortal golf. You lose the golf game, you die. It is that simple. This isn't a golf for losers. This is golf built for the strongest in the world. Crush your opponents financially through shady back-dealings with the great sport of golf.

But seriously, watch this anime. It is one of the most wild rides on television right now and is currently airing on Crunchyroll. This series may not win awards or go down in the record books, yet it is certainly more captivating than most. The team behind the project is driving with no brakes and I couldn't be happier. May Birdie Wing persist for as long as possible. It is simply the peak television experience.
